The old footbridge is quite narrow, and the sides are made of metal strips that criss cross in a lattice designed, riveted together. The floor of the bridge has ridges every few feet that run from side to side and could be a tripping hazard.

City Mill River stretches out straight, going east towards the ArcelorMittal Orbit. In the other direction it disappears under a low bridge.

Branching off the river here is Carpenters Road Lock, which connects City Mill River to Waterworks River. The lock sits beneath a footbridge, and the underside of the bridge is made hundreds of polished steel diamond-shaped panels that reflect everything below them. The lock has large metal gates that sit in the water, with a gantry and winding mechanism to lift them up so that boats can pass underneath.
