Step 1: Setting up

Equipment and safety

The floating crane inside the lock

Locks are not always in accessible places, and you may not have much room, so you need to plan the site carefully. At Carpenters Road Lock we used a couple of barges to create a floating office and rest area for the crew.

We also started the project with a floating crane, so we could lift things in and out of the lock. You can see the crane at work in this timelapse film, during the first part of the works.

Another important step was to create safety barriers so that the public didn’t get too close to what we are doing. We opened the barriers up when school groups came to visit (as long as they behaved sensibly), and of course the public could always get a good view down into the site from the bridge.
