You are standing in the middle of a long, thin island between two rivers, but they are not visible from here as they are down from this level. A wide promenade runs along the spine of the island, with refreshment kiosks and public benches, and some fun installations for children (and adults) to climb on.
The London Stadium dominates the view in one direction, reached by a very wide bridge that continues in the same line as the last one. There are seven tall, widely spaced lighting posts, which have a ring of lights at the top and a wind turbine. The big Arcelor Mittal Orbit sculpture is in the middle distance, with its familiar red steel loops and swirls around the viewing platform at its top.
In the middle of the open space where you are standing is a wiggly line of water jets set into the ground, in a very shallow basin. When the jets are turned on, they spurt up in different patterns, and children love to play amongst them if it’s hot.
The ground is flat with a gravel surface, and there are few obstructions on the pathways. There are some continuous benches that form curves or crescents in the seating areas.
